Engorgement when breastfeeding

Updated: Mar 18

If you have a really active milk production capacity, your breasts will be full and swollen with milk. This can create a lot of discomfort and pain as your body is adjusting to the supply requirements of the baby.

Here are some things you can do to relieve the pressure!

  • Breastfeed often, around 8-12 times daily.

  • Make sure the baby is latched on properly because it ensures the baby is feeding well and removing the milk.

  • If your child isn’t feeling well, use a breast pump to remove the breast milk that will quickly relieve the pressure and pain.

  • Use clean, cold, cabbage leaves as a cold compress.

  • Gently massage breasts

  • Express a little milk before you begin breastfeeding. Softening the breast will help your baby latch on and feed easier.
