Plugged Milk Ducts

Updated: Mar 18

Plugged milk ducts are small hard lumps in the breasts that you can actually feel. These lumps unfortunately can clog and block your milk ducts, causing the dreaded engorgement.

Don’t be too worried since this will go away after a few days, however here are some tips to help clear that jam!

  • We can’t emphasize enough how important it is to make sure your baby is latching on properly since it helps to remove your breast milk efficiently.

  • Breastfeed on the plugged breast first. Your baby’s strong suction may just clear it.

  • Breastfeed often to prevent milk buildup and engorgement which will clog those ducts.

  • Apply a warm compress to soothe the breast and make it flow easier.

  • Do a light massage to your breast as you breastfeed to encourage milk flow.

  • Get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids.

Note: If you have trouble with clearing the lumps and beginning to develop constant pain, or even a fever, call your doctor immediately for help or advice.
