Sore Nipples from Breastfeeding

Updated: Mar 18

Sore Nipples

Having a baby continue to suckle can make your nipples feel tender and quite a bit sensitive. However, cracked or very sore or bleeding nipples may be a real problem, especially when it makes breastfeeding too painful to bear.

  • Make sure the baby latches on properly during feeding.

  • Use your finger to gently break the suction before pulling your baby away from the breast.

  • Try different breastfeeding positions to get your baby and yourself comfortable during breastfeeding.

  • Keep your breastfeeding sessions short and frequent.

  • Apply a warm, moist compress to relieve the soreness.

Tip: Rub freshly expressed breast milk around your nipples after each feeding to help your nipples heal.
